Wish I Had Taken a Five Hour Driving Course

Five hour driving courseWhen I was younger I was not a careful driver.  Granted I never got into any serious accidents, but I definitely could have used some education gleaned from a five hour driving course.  During my teenage years my eldest sister taught me to drive and while she taught me the basics of driving, maneuvering through traffic, and parking, that was pretty much it.  In high school I had to attend a driver’s education course but the class was a joke and it was pretty much an excuse for all the guys to joke around and talk about any and everything else besides effective and safe driving.  I did pass my road test the first time through but the first few years after that have been, to put it lightly, rocky.

A five hour driving class is more effective at teaching an inexperienced driver more about competent driving than sub-par courses or amateur tutoring.  The people teaching these five hour courses have been teaching drivers for years and have the experience necessary to properly train new drivers. Teens who take a class will undoubtedly become better and more responsible drivers when they complete the course.

Had I taken a driving course, I would have never gotten into the scrapes I did when I was young.  Well, you can learn from my mistake at least.

Five hour driving courseMy niece is of the age that she has begun learning to drive from her parents.  As someone really close to her I am both proud and just a little worried about her.  Teenagers are notoriously bad drivers and while I believe she is responsible, there is still no substitute for experience and professional training.  All I have to do is just look back into my own history and remember some of the bad decisions I have made as a young driver.  I am both happy and fortunate enough to say I was never involved in a major accident, but some of the mistakes I made have been costly.  This is why I recommend a five hour driving class.

Five hour driving courses give an uneducated driver more information and help them prepare for the eventual road test.  But more important than preparing for the the road test is the fact that the driving courses gives new, young drivers a chance to become more mature in terms of how to properly manage the roads.

The teenage boy was surprised and a little put-off at that.  “Why?”

“Well for one thing, you will have trained professionals to teach you how to properly drive your car.  They have years of experience in teaching young men and women how to become better and responsible drivers.  I only drive to and from work and outside of that only when I have to and I do not have much time to teach you.  Besides, you are a teenager, which means you have a higher risk of getting into an accident than me or anyone older than you.”

“Really?”

Get Motorcycle Driving Lessons Before Buying Your First Bike

Motorcycle Driving LessonsI plan to buy a motorcycle in the future.  Not one of those racing bikes but a “hog”.  I love all the polished chrome and the look of Harley’s in particular.  But before I even buy my first bike, I plan to take motorcycle driving lessons.

One of the advantages of taking riding lessons is the possibility of getting a discount on insurance.  The cost of the driving lesson will pay for itself when you take into the account how much you’ll be able to save on insurance.  And of course, the most important benefit that comes out of taking one of these courses is how to properly handle your bike.  You can argue that you can always borrow a friend’s bike and practice with it as they “teach” you.  From personal experience however, most of the friends I know taught themselves and a majority of them have gotten into accidents.  Thankfully none have been seriously injured.  Lessons learned from these courses could have helped my friends avoid those accidents.  And of course, their insurance premiums went up as a result.

Say your kid wants a motorcycle, are you going to just put the keys in their hand and tell them to practice on their own?  Let’s face it, teenagers are arguably the worst drivers of CARS.  Imagine how they are with bikes that have no safety features other than what the rider is wearing.

After My Five Hour Driving Course

five hour driving courseThe first thing I did after completing my five hour driving class was to get onto the highway and go out to the scenic route where the roads are banked and it’s just two lanes running underneath furry pines and evergreens, beeches and oaks,past that farm with high wheat grass and barbed cattle fences, where a lone red silo precipitates the small town of Andersonville, with its white-steepled church and wood-fronted general store, two stop signs and pickup-driving denizens.

There’s a burger joint out there just before St. Helena. It’s renowned all over town for its big cheesy burgers and the thick cut cajun- salted fries. They even have a burger with an egg on it, and I sat there alone eating that one till I was too full to walk comfortably, and had to stagger back to the car, which was mine now, now that I knew how to drive; and although I wasn’t yet a master, I was a lot closer to being one after my five hour driving course.

I could drive anywhere, and the road was before me. But I had homework to do, so I headed back home, thanking my lucky stars that it was Saturday and I had finished my five hour driving course.

A Motorcycle Driving School For Me

motorcycle driving schoolI’m going to take motorcycle driving lessons. It’s something I’ve always wanted to do, like sky diving and backpacking around the world. I think I’m finally ready.

Because in twenty years you’re going to be more upset by the things you didn’t do than by the things you did. So I’m going to a motorcycle driving school. I’ll wear a helmet. I’ll be safe; I won’t ride in the rain or try to pop wheelies or take hair pin turns so that my knees brush the ground, no — I’ll know what I’m doing so I’ll be able to enjoy it.

I’ve ridden around a parking lot to get the feel of it, turned on the bike and played with the clutch and the front brake. I don’t stall the bike, or stop it roughly any more, and I know the friction zone, which is where the bike wants to keep going once I’ve let out the clutch and applied some gas; and I feel like I’m ready to start out in traffic. But I’m still kind of scared that I can get in an accident, and just the thought of being surrounded by 18-wheelers makes me nervous. That’s why I’m going to a motorcycle driving school.

five hour driving classSometimes I want to get into a car and drive down the highway until I don’t recognize anything. There’s something so liberating about driving miles on the interstate or on an old state route, it’s freeing, so freeing to watch the billboards become more and more sparse and inexpensive, to watch the highway malls turn into grassy fields, and to feel the country take you into its bosom. There are silos and barns, white Puritan churches, small cities with 30-story buildings and steel bridges from the ’70s, and road, black, gray, purple in twilight, dotted with white or lined in yellow, with gravelly shoulders and more, always more up ahead. But then I remember that I don’t have my license and I that I can’t be free to see it all.

The best thing to do is take a five hour driving class and prepare myself for the NYS road test. Then I can drive my parents’ car when I need to get away, to open my mind to the road and the clean air and possibilities. And with learning the rules of the road comes a deeper understanding of all that went into building it and maintaining it, how we all take turns to drive on it, and how we all learned how to be free upon it.
